I am interested in the evolutionary and ecological interactions of hosts and their parasites. My PhD research focused on novel host-parasite associations. More specifically, I studied the impact of an introduced parasitic nest fly on Darwin's finches in the Galapagos. For my post-doctoral research, I am investigating host-parasite interactions in the context of co-infections. Most organisms are host to several parasites, each of which can uniquely interact with the host and one another. In the Whiteman lab, I use a plant-herbivore-pathogen system of model organisms to better understand co-infection interactions as well as the underlying genetic mechanisms of those interactions.
